Wide Range of Forged Pistons Now Available

Pistons

The days when forged pistons were only considered by racers are gone. These high silicon alloy aluminum pistons run 0.003" skirt clearances and are ideal for both road and race configurations. Very light weight with valve pockets adequate for most popular race cams. Light weight, heavy duty pins, safe round wire clips and the latest technology rings. Each design has had 2-3 years race or road development. These configurations have been perfected over 25 years of exclusive Lotus/Ford engine building experience. Made in the USA. All part numbers are in stock, as are all replacement rings, pins, clips etc.

Ring pack designation indicates ring thickness combinations and material.

COSW = Traditional Cosworth F-1 Technology

  • 1 mm top ring, ductile iron
  • 1 mm 2nd ring, grey iron
  • 4 mm oil ring, usually 3-piece rail type
  • XC = Latest Motorcycle Technology

  • 1 mm top ring, chrome plated, high tensile steel
  • 1.2 mm 2nd ring, grey iron
  • 2.8 mm oil ring, 4-piece rail type
  • There is not a lot to choose between them, performance-wise. Specific choices are primarily guided by availability in specific bore sizes. Both types work very well in road applications.

    "Stroker" piston. Use with cross flow 3.06" stroker crank in T/C block or in a "BD" bottom end (cross flow block and stroke but BDD 5.23" rods). Both give 1700cc woth 83.5mm bore, 1760cc with 85.. bore.

    For the long rod fans. With these pistons you can stuff a BDD 5.23" rod in a T/C block (with standard T/C stroke 2.86 crank.) Also suitable for old Holbay F-3 T/C engines. 86mm bore fits FVC blocks and useful in late uprated thick-wall blocks using 72mm stroke cranks (1900cc) We don't tell who buys 'em.

    * Actually .045" overbore -- legal SCCA O/S. Also keeps displacement just below FIA 1600cc limit and allows you to hone out and save most worn T/C race blocks and stay legal. Since we sell about one set a year we also offer other sizes!

    Flat Top Piston

    Flat Top Pistons

    For non-cross flow pushrod engines from 1000cc 105E through 1800cc 116E, these can also be used to make T/C and BDA pistons by flycutting the crowns with the appropriate valve relief. 446E crowns can be shortened up to 0.080", all others up to 0.030" to effect various stroke/rod/block combinations.

    Cosworth MK11 compression height. For reasons unknown, Cosworth decked these blocks 1/8". Can also be used in standard 105E/109E block with cross flow length (4.93") rod for improved rod/stroke ratio. All early 105E/109E blocks will bore 85mm. Most will accept a further 0.040 overbore to 86mm to recover that worn out racer.

    There are a lot of cross flow race and high performance engines out there. To service this popular engine, we offer the following pistons: two compression heights (standard -vs- BDD Cosworth con rod length) and all bore sizes out to 85mm obtainable in the latest "select" high nickel cross flow block now available.
